Today, on this day of September 11th, 1996, I learned a valuable lesson
in organic chemistry class. When looking at the hybridization of a given
molecule, the lone or non-bonding pairs of electrons surrounding a given
atom (if any) contribute to the hybridization as well as the bonding
pairs of electrons. This can make the difference in determining if a
certain atom within a molecule has sp, sp2, or sp3 hybridization.
