TOJC:Chapter Two

On page 73, there's an example of a carboxylic acid--formic acid. It
shows R, the alkyl group, as being a hydrogen. I thought that alkyl
groups had to have at least a carbon and a hydrogen. Does anyone know
what's happening with that? Thanks!
