TOJC- antibonding orbitals

I was a little confused from what the prof. said this morning
(918) about anitbonding orbitals. Since he said that they consisted
of opposite sign p orbitals and they repel each other, how is there
a bond formed between them. It seems to me that because they repel
each other, they couldn't ever overlap and form a bond. Anyway,
anyone's input on this topic would be appreciated. Thanks
