Heather, you were asking about delocalized orbitals on benzene rings. The
way it was explained to me that I found helpful was this: imagine the benzene
ring sitting on its "side" (horizontally). Instead of imagining the orbitals
as two halves of dumbbells sticking up and down from the plane of the benzene
ring, picture the orbitals as two doughnuts, one stacked on top of the other.
The space between the doughnuts is the node, and the electrons are hovering
around in the doughnut shaped areas.
Rebecca, I'm glad you asked about anti-bonding orbitals! I thought I was the
only one who was lost in space on the subject. What are they, and do I need
to worry about them? I hope not, because I wouldn't know one if it walked up
and bit me!
