Charles,
I believe an ionic liquid would be any liquid that would conduct
electricity and where one would find ions. An eg would be NACL in water.
The water molecules would surround the ion of Na+ and Cl-. This would
allow the flow of electricty.
I am guessing but I think that any ionic compound can make an ionic
liquid. I do know that the above statement depends on solubility of the
molecules involved. Group 1 highly soluble and therefore would probably
make good ionic liquids.
I hope that I have not clouded the answer and that it is helpful as well
as correct.
