On page 765 in the lab book it reads "a given compund always travels a
fiexed distance relative to the distance the solvent front travles." So
the distance the spots moved on the TLC compared to the distance the
solvent front moved is given as a decimal. The decimal is called the Rf.
Under specified conditions the Rf corresponds to a physical property of
that compond.
Pg 726 of the same lab book says "The continuous flow of solvent throught
the column elutes, or washes.... The solutes or materials to be seperated
are called eluates or elutants; and the solvents are called eluents.
