My understanding of the "R" group suggests that the the answer(s) to
your question(s) is/are yes. (If that makes any sense.) As long as the
bond between the R group and the funtional group is a single bond it is
fine. I'm pretty sure that there are no holds barred in the rest of the
carbon chain. Propyl, octyl, C-C, C=C, etc. Just fine.
