TOJC--Fri.'s problem

Hi! I really hope someone can try to explain this a bit. I didn't quite
understand the first step in the reaction from Friday-or at least the way
it was shown. How exactly does the H2SO4 react with the ethanol? From
what I could tell, the H from the sulfuric acid went to the ethanol and
bonded with one of the unbonded electron pairs on the oxygen. THen did
the H go and bond with the oxygen on the salicylic acid? If that is what
happened, what was the explanation we were given for it? I'd really
appreciate it if someone could help me out because my brain just ended up
getting fried when I was trying to figure it out.

THanks!
