Kevin,
The reason behind the 1-ol at the end of a molecule containing an
alcohol group is that it if you have the a molecule like 2-buten-1-ol,
this states that there is a double bond on the second carbon and an
alcohol group on the first carbon. You need to mention where the alcohol
group is with -1-ol or else the name would be 2-butenol which causes
confusion on where the double bond and the alcohol group. Hope this
lessens the confusion.
