Julie,
The way I understood portecting groups was that is you wanted to
make a longer chain or just react one end of a molecule without affecting
the alcohol at the other end then a protecting group is needed. the
potecting group as shown in the book removes the H and attaches to the O.
This then allows for a reaction to take place at the other end or the
Leaving group. Well I hope this made a little sense.
