This is one of those things that always throws me off, so i wanted to
clarify that downfield is on the left of the spectrum and upfield to the
right. The reason the numbering is backwards might have something to do
with the fact that the applied magnetic field strength increases from left
to right and the degree of the chemical shift is inversly related to the
magnetic field strength.
