In answering your question, I believe that you have correctly numbered the
carbon chain. However it doesn't matter which side you number from since the
methyl group and hydroxy group are on the same carbon (in the middle). Also,
there is another name to your compound which is also in the solution manual
-- tert-Butyl alchol this is a common name.
