TOJC: Reduction of alcohols

I don't understand how you would know that neither NaBH4 nor LiAlH4 would
reduce RCH2OH and what kind of "work up" was Dr. Frhyle talking about in
class yesterday when he said that it would require a work up in order for
this reduction to take place. Also, could these regeants cause a
reduction of a compound that does not have a double bond? Thanks.
