stability of ions

To fellow listmembers,
I know that to make a good leaving group, a molecule must be able
to form a pretty stable ion and/or a weak base, can someone tell me how we
are supposed to know how stable of an ion a certain molecule will make? I
may have missed something in the book, or I maybe missing something very
basic. Forgive me if this is a stupid question.
