well, i'm not sure either if we have to know this, but the octane rating
is just a measure of how "good" a gasoline is for use in a standard
engine. the lower the rating, the worse the gasoline and the more
knocking that occurs when you use it. the rating is found by determining
what the comprable mixture of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane and heptane would be.
(look at pages 124 and 125 for the fuller explanation).
an octane rating of zero would mean that it was the worst gas, and probaby
wouldn't run an engine with any efficiency, if at all.
i dont' know what to do about section 4.13, but it is not that long, so i
am figuring on just reading it.
hope this helps somewhat.
