an octane rating measures the amount of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane and heptane
present. for example, it tells how much is present in the gas for your
car.

an octane rating of zero indicates that only heptane, CH3(CH2)5CH3, is
being burned in an engine. Heptane produces knocking, whereas
2,2,4-trimethylpentane burns smoothly.
