I have a question from problem 18b from chapter four. The study guide
gives the answer as 2,2-dimethyl-1-butanol, but I am wondering if the -1-
before butanol is really necessary? It seems like I remember hearing that
if there is no locant given before the "butanol" (in this case), then it
could automatically be assumed that the hydroxyl group was attached to an
end carbon on
the chain, and that carbon would be number 1 automatically (according
to page 135), so calling
it -1-butanol would be somewhat redundant. If I'm wrong, I would
appreciate any clarification.
