cloves lab

in this week's lab i distilled the cloves and collected my distillate in
the flask. when adding the methylene chloride to the distillate it
separated into two layers. the bottom layer in my testtube turned a deep
yellow when i added the methylene chloride. i talked to others in the lab
and there's were all a clear liquid as the bottom layer. is there
anything wrong with my sample? why did it turn yellow?
