According to the book, page. 208-
"...we ananlyze each center separately and decide whether it is
(R) or (S). Then, using numbers, we tell which designation refers to
which carbon atom." For example, since 2,3-dibromobutane has an "R"
designated stereocenter at each of its 2nd and 3rd carbon, it is named
(2R,3R)-2,3-dibromobutane. I hope that helps.
