Kristy,
I also found the lab book's explanation of isoprene units rather vague. As
near as I can figure, isoprene units are 5-carbon segments, although the book
does not explain what is so special or what the distinguishing features are
that define an isoprene unit. Anyway, caryophyllene can be divided into three
isoprene units by thermal "cracking." That's what I put on my lab report, so
if it's incorrect, I will find out soon!
