The reason the reaction follows the SN1 pathway is because it is in
solvolysis. Meaning the solvent is also the nucleophile. Since it is a
nucleophilic reaction it is a substitution reaction, and being a
solvolysis reaction means it takes a SN1 PATHWAY.
