usually 1-prime and 2-prime alkyl halides follow the SN2 reaction and
3-prime alkyl halides follow the SN1 reaction. This is due to the size--
the nucleophile doesn't have enough room to approach a 3-prime alkyl
halide in a SN2 reaction so it has to follow a SN1 reaction. In the SN1
reaction, a trigonal arrangement is achieved, creating enough space for
the nucleohpile to attack.
