I don't see anywhere in the text that says Maleic Anhydride is not
conjugated. In fact, it is because it has an sp2 carbon adjacent to the
double bond. Regardless, in the Diels-Alder rxn, on the diene has to be
conjugated. The dienophile just has to have a double bond. Maleic
Anhydride just happens to be conjugated as well.
I hope this sheds some light on the question. If not, I don't think I
understand what you are trying to say.
