Bridges TOJC

Okay, I know that for a compound to be endo or exo you have to have a
bridge, and I know that the diene must be cyclic to have a bridge. My
question is, is that the only way to recognize a bridge in a compound and
how do you know which bridge is the longest. What makes up the bridge to
define its length. I know this is a bit vague, but any help would be
highly appreciated, thanks, good times!!!
