alkenes do attack (+) compounds. for example, in chapter 8 we learned
about the acid-catalyzed nhydration of alkenes. there is a mechanism on
page 337. alkenes cannot attack a (-) compound. a negatively charged
compound can, however, attack an alkene. on page 778 the robinson
annulation and michael addition utilize this mechanism.
