i just looked at the problem and i think that the way you are
looking at it is cutting it through the alkene, right? in the book, the
only time they show a molecule being cut through the double bond is when
they are talking about to diterpenes being linked. i am unsure if that
means you can break double bonds to form isoprene units as well. i do
know, though, that all of the isoprene units have to have a 4 carbon chain
with a methyl substituent attached (although this can be double bonded).
if someone could clarify this definetely i would appreciate it.
