  1. Identify the central ions and the ligands, determine the coordination number and the oxidation state of the central ion, and establish the net charge on a complex ion.

  2. Give the coordination numbers of some common metal ions and write the names and formulas of some common unidentate and multidentate ligands.

  3. Write distinctive names based on formulas of complexes, and distinctive formulas based on names.

  4. Draw plausible structures for complex ions from information conveyed by their names and formulas.

  5. Describe the types of isomerism found among complex ions and identify the possible isomers in specific cases (excluding optical isomers).
