Summer 1999 Research Images

Research Projects:

1) Phase behavior in polymer blends using wide angle light scattering.

This project studies light scattering of a three component blend consisting of polybutadiene, polystyrene, and a copolymer of these two homopolymers. The process of unmixing is very important in many industrial processes.

Example Data: Small angle light scattering

(25% Polybutadiene / 75% Polystyrene Blend
Annealed at 170C for an hour
and temperature jumped to 110.0C.)

    Optical Microscopy:

    (30% Polybutadiene / 70% Polystyrene Blend Annealed at 80C for 24 hours.)

Funding has been provided by

  1. NSF-RUI #DMR #0075968 and #9705424
  2. The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation of Research Corporation."

2) Measurement of Polymeric Motion Using Carbon-13 Magnetic Relaxation:

Polymeric motions on the nanosecond timescale are being studied using spin-lattice, T1, NMR techniques. The chemical system studied will be polymer blend solutions and copolymers in solution.

Funded was provided by "The Petroleum Research Fund."

3) Monte Carlo Simulations of Three Component Polymer Blends

Example data can be found here.

I hope to have this repaired soon.
